Who we are

Welcome to FreeChurch Toronto, a church with a mission to be a light in our city. People travel from all over Toronto bringing with them their different backgrounds and experiences and uniting as a community with a purpose of loving God and loving our neighbours.

FreeChurch is a community that strives to live out our faith through our actions – within our neighbourhoods, our relationships, and in our vocations. It is our vision to see prodigals come home and Christ followers formed in a community empowered for the flourishing of our city.

We hope that you can join us this Sunday at our weekly worship service. We meet at 10:30am at the Centre for Social Innovation - Annex (720 Bathurst Street).

History

In January 2001, with the vision of a church that was “for our peers, by our peers”, Todd Cantelon and Gord Marriage planted Freedomize Toronto. Freedomize, which would later undergo a name change to FreeChurch Toronto, began meeting at St Andrew’s in the heart of downtown Toronto. David McGhee was added to the leadership team serving as a pastor for eight years and was an integral voice in shaping the unique creative culture that is still present at FreeChurch today.

FreeChurch also had the privilege to have the leadership of Cyril Guerette a pastor, professor, and rapper who served as Senior Pastor. Under his leadership, FreeChurch grew into a new space at St Stephen-in-the-Fields and expanded into two services to meet the needs of the growing FreeChurch community.

This growth expanded beyond our city and in 2010, FreeChurch had the privilege of supporting Kevin Makins as his team planted Eucharist, a church in downtown Hamilton that continues to grow today.

Jon Osmond joined the leadership team in 2013 as Planting Pastor to implement the growing vision of living out our faith within our neighbourhoods. In January 2014, we transplanted our ever-growing morning service to the Annex neighbourhood. In February of 2015 FreeChurch began a formal affiliation with the Ontario Conference of Mennonite Brethren denomination. This affiliation ended in March of 2023.

In 2016, Jon Osmond was appointed our Senior Pastor and alongside our Elders continues to foster FreeChurch’s vision of seeing prodigals come home and Christ followers formed in a community empowered for the flourishing of our city.
